Since 2004, OSC has undertaken numerous baseline survey, underwater noise, and MMO projects in the UK, Germany, Norway, Finland, Taiwan, and published in peer-reviewed journals. OSC can provide noise measurement and marine mammal mitigation services for windfarm projects worldwide.

OSC’s core research programme is the controversial solution of converting offshore oil and gas installations into artificial reefs for wildlife. We have over a decade of experience measuring and modelling underwater noise, and monitoring harbour porpoises and their prey around installations.

OSC has over a decade of experience working within the seismic industry, a firm understanding of all guidelines, and can assist at every step of the way, from advice during the project planning stage to provision of Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) systems and Operators.

OSC provides a range of Acoustic Deterrent Devices (ADD) in the form of low-power pingers and higher-powered seal scarers. We can provide cost-effective advice to suit your budget, and/or experimental trials to test your devices efficiency.

OSC staff have been cleared to work on sensitive projects by several military institutions. As industry scientists, we are discrete, independent, not aligned with any Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), and importantly, know how to keep our heads down.

In Europe, MMOs are used for Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) and conductor driving. The requirement for PAM systems and PAM Operators is also becoming increasingly common. OSC can supply all MMO and PAM required.

It is not unusual for regulator permit requirements to stipulate the use of MMOs for projects involving pipe or cable laying. OSC are familiar with permit requirements, so can provide advice on mitigation requirements for pipeline and cable laying projects worldwide.

Increasingly worldwide, MMOs are being used during hydrographical surveys, particularly in sensitive areas. Regulations vary between countries, but it is typical to alter the start-up procedure depending on industry guidelines. OSC can provide all your mitigation needs, from advice, production of Marine Mammal Mitigation Plans, liaison with regulators, provision of MMOs and PAM Operators and reporting.

OSC are not jack of all trades, but underwater noise and marine mammal experts. As such, we are contracted on a regular basis by large management consultancies to handle issues regarding our area of expertise. We have 100% business ethics, have forged long lasting relationships with many well-known firms, and invite collaborative tender opportunities.

Scientists at OSC have extensive experience analysing data and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Topics range from Rigs-to-Reefs and decommissioning, marine mammal presence and behaviour around offshore structures, potential impacts of noise on marine mammals, noise measurement and modelling of ADDs, drilling operations, etc., and even foraging ecology of bats!

On occasion universities contract us on projects where their expertise is limited. We invite collaborative research only from academic institutions that have a proven record of accomplishment of excellence and impeccable ethics. We also supervise students from undergraduate to PhD-level on their research projects.
